Thailand: Fish Tom Yum Soup & Grilled Pork Salad (moo yang nam tok) with Aunty

by Cindy Her

Hi foodies! I was in Thailand last month and was able to eat a lot of great food! Not only that, my aunty invited us over for lunch and dinner and she was able to cook us a delicious pot of tom yum soup with fish and a plate of grilled pork salad also known as moo yang nam tok. It was so good, I’m still drooling as I watch this video. Tom yum soup is so simple to make as long as you have great and fresh ingredients. The grilled pork salad is also easy to make. These dishes were spicy, sweet, sour, and salty. I love everything about Thai food. There is really no set measurement for these two dishes though since it’s all done through cooking it a lot and just knowing how much or how little to add. But I’ll do my best to add a recipe down below and then you guys can adjust to your liking as you make it along the way. Anywho, my aunty is an amazing cook!

But I hope you all enjoy watching my aunty cook and also see what and how we eat in Thailand.

How we ate our lunch at my Aunties house. I LOVED eating on the ground. Brings me back to time when all was simple and classy.

Enjoying a meal with family is the best.

Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 2 whole fish chopped (any white fish works just great)
  • 1 quart water (4 cups)
  • 1 tbsp tamarind
  • 6-8 dried chili peppers (more or less on spice level)
  • 1 lemongrass
  • 3 slices galangal
  • 4 kaffir lime leaf
  • 2 shallots sliced
  • 2 medium size tomatoes roughly sliced
  • 1-2 garlic rough sliced
  • 2-3 tsp of salt (add less and then add more after tasting)
  • 1-2 tsp fish sauce
  • 1/2 tsp msg (optional)
  • Fresh cilantro and culantro

Instructions

1) Clean and cut the fish accordingly into bite size pieces. Set aside.

2) In a pot, add in the water, galangal, lemongrass, garlic, shallots, lime leaf, dried chili peppers, and tamarind. Bring it to a boil and let it simmer for about 5 minutes. Then add in the tomatoes and let it simmer for 1 minute.

3)  Then add in the salt, fish sauce. and msg if you are using it. Taste to adjust.

4) Add in the fish and carefully stir it so the fish is submerged in the boiling water. Cook it until the fish is just cooked. Do not over boil or else the fish will become crumbles. Taste and adjust seasoning. Turn off heat and then add in the cut cilantro and culantro. Stir carefully.

5) All done! Serve with white rice.
