Nyob Zoo All!

Here’s to one of my guilty summer snacks: FRUIT w/ Fish Sauce & Pepper. Sounds weird??? You won’t know until you try it. 🙂 Summertime means plums & peaches are in season. In my family, we love to add fish sauce, pepper flakes & sugar into sour crunchy fruits to give it that mouth watering taste/flavor. I also love to eat it with sweet navel oranges as well. It’s soooo easy to make and hits all your taste buds. So here’s how I made it.

Note: Other fruits that are great with fish sauce/pepper/sugar includes: Mango, pomegranate, starfruit, pineapple, and or any other sour fruit of your liking.

ORANGE: Sweet navel orange with fish sauce & chili pepper flakes

Flavor component: Sweet, salty, umami and spicy.

Peach: Crunchy white or yellow peach with sugar, fish sauce, and chili pepper flakes

Flavor component: Slightly tart, crunchy, sweet, salty, and spicy

Sour Red Plum: Super tart red plums with fish sauce, sugar, chili pepper flakes and a little msg.

Flavor component: Super tart, crunchy, sweet, salty, spicy, and full of umami.

Toasted rice powder is optional for a little bit of toastyness
The seasonings can also be mixed separately into a bowl and have the fruit be dipped in instead of mixed in. ENJOY THE SIMPLICITY 🙂 So mouth watering! Sour plum always makes me drool
Enjoy!

FRUIT W/ FISH SAUCE & CHILI PEPPERS

Here’s to one of my guilty summer snacks: FRUIT w/ Fish Sauce & Pepper. Summertime means plums & peaches are in season. In my family we love to add fish sauce & pepper flakes & sugar into sour crunchy fruits to give it that mouth watering taste/flavor.
Prep Time 5 minutes
Course Snack
Cuisine Hmong, Lao
Servings 2 people

Ingredients

Orange

  • 2 whole navel oranges (Peeled/sliced into bite size pieces)
  • 1 1/2 tsp fish sauce (I use 3 crab brand)
  • 1 tsp chili pepper flakes (add more if you want more spice)

Plum

  • 8 oz sour/crunchy red plums (sliced into bite size pieces skin on)
  • 1 Tbsp fish sauce
  • 2 tsp chili pepper flakes
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp sugar (add less or more depends on you)
  • 1/8 tsp MSG (about a pinch)
  • 1/4 tsp toasted rice powder (OPTIONAL ONLY) I don't add it because of preference

Peach

  • 4 small crunchy white peaches (sour the better) (or 2 big crunchy yellow peaches) [peeled/sliced]
  • 1 Tbsp sugar (add less or more depends on you)
  • 1 Tbsp fish sauce
  • 2 tsp chili pepper flakes

Instructions

Orange

  • Mix everything into a bowl and taste to adjust. I like to use navel orange for the sweetness. You can also make this with sour oranges if you want more of that sour sensation. If the navel oranges are too sweet for you, feel free to add lime juice or other acidity of your choice.

Plum

  • Mix everything into a bowl and taste to adjust seasoning. If the plums are too sour, feel free to add more sugar. Add more fish sauce if needed.

Peach

  • Mix everything into a bowl and taste to adjust seasoning. If the peaches are too sweet, feel free to add some lime juice. Add more fish sauce if needed. You want crunchy peaches for good texture.
