Steaming Rice in a Bamboo Basket: Mov Vum Cub

by Cindy Her

Hello Foodies!

Today, I’ll be showing you all how to steam rice in a bamboo basket rice steamer. In Hmong, we call this Mov Vum Cub. Mov means rice, vum means to blanched or poached, and cub means to steam. This is one of my favorite ways to cook rice because of the amazing texture. Through this process, the rice gets fluffy and it’s a delight to eat. It doesn’t clump up or become mushy if you make it correctly. This method of steaming rice is the way my mom would make when we have a big family party or event going on. If you have a big steamer, use this process to make your rice. Hope you all give it a try and let me know if your rice comes out just as nice and fluffy. Happy Cooking!

Ingredients

  • 4 rice cups of Jasmine rice
  • water
  • Rice net
  • Hot boiling water
  • Bamboo steamer with a pot

Instructions

1) In a bowl, soak the Jasmine rice with water with about 2 inches of water over laying the rice. Let it sit overnight and soak up.

2) The next day, drain the soaking water and rinse with fresh water. Drain well and pour it into a rice net that has been put inside the bamboo basket.

3) Add water to the pot and let it come to a boil. Put the bamboo basket filled with rice on. Cover with lid and let it steam for 15 minutes or so. After round 1 of steaming, pour rice into a bowl and add in hot boiling water just enough to loosen up the rice.  Stir and let the rice soak up the water then return to the rice net and put it back into the bamboo basket to be steamed again for an additional 5-8 minutes or until desire texture.

4) Pour rice into bowl and serve.

Notes

If you add too much hot boiling water after the first round of steaming, you can strain it before doing the last steam. This way, your rice will not get too mushy.
