Salt & Pepper Tofu
Salt and pepper TOFU! This one is great for any vegetarians! It's super light, pillowy and super delightful to eat.
Ingredients
For the tofu
- 14 oz extra firm tofu (cubed)
- 1 1/2 cups water (room temp)
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 2 tsp soy sauce
- 1 1/2 tsp sugar
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- Canola or vegetable oil to fry
For the salt & pepper seasoning
- 1/2 tsp salt (add more if desire)
- 1 tsp fresh cracked black pepper
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp mushroom powder
- 1/4 tsp ground Szechuan peppercorn (OPTIONAL) only if you want to add it in
Vegetables
- 1 small onion (sliced)
- 2 green onion (sliced)
- 2 jalapeno (sliced)
- 2 whole garlic cloves (minced) (~1 tbsp)
Instructions
For the tofu
- In a bowl, add in the water, salt, garlic powder, soy sauce, and sugar. Give it a good stir to dissolve the seasonings. Then add in the cubed tofu. Let the tofu sit in the brine for at least 2-4 hrs to allow the seasoning to fully get submerged into the tofu. You can also brine it overnight as well. Then drain and let it sit for 15 minutes before coating it in cornstarch. Once coated in cornstarch, let it sit for another 5 minutes before frying it in oil. Heat oil to 375'F and cook for 5-8 minutes or until crispy. Drain and set aside while you cook the vegetables.
For the salt and pepper seasoning
- Add everything into a small bowl and mix well. Set aside.
Vegetables
- Add about 2 Tbsp of the frying oil and cook the sliced onions, green onion, garlic and jalapeno on high heat. Let it sit for 1 minute without stirring to get it some good char/flavor. Stir and cook for only 3 minutes. You still want a decent bite to the onions. Turn off heat and add in the fried tofu and the seasoning and mix to coat. Serve with rice or eat as it.

Hello! My tofu did not fry like yours, the corn starch coating would just slide off the tofu when I was frying it. It did not evenly coat onto the tofu like yours. I followed the 15 minute drying and 5 minute coating step and had the oil temperature at 375. Any extra tips for this part?
