It's Cindy Her!

Nyob Zoo! My Name is Cindy Her. I’m a full time Pastry Chef in the Pacific Northwest and creator, recipe developer, and video producer for C.HerCreations (C.HawjCreations), a digital platform dedicated to Hmong food and storytelling. I specifically focus on Hmong food I grew up eating but I also venture into other South East Asian food as well. As a second generation Hmong American woman, my goal is to teach you what Hmong people love to eat, what we cook, how we cook it, how it has evolved, and how we enjoy it. So welcome to my food blog! I want you to learn a little bit more about the Hmong food culture and I hope you all stay tuned on this culinary adventure with me.

Spring is officially here!! And that means it’s ti Spring is officially here!! And that means it’s time to get the garden ready! Here’s a little motivational video to hopefully get my plants growing just as good as my puj. Just look at her lemongrass plant! So healthy and lush. 

My mom and I are planting ginger this year so we’ll see how that goes. Grandma grows ginger every year and she said (in the video) that she usually starts them in March or April and let them grow all the way through late summer/early fall. She’ll buy a few fresh ginger roots from the store and place them in a rectangle planter with some soil over a heat pad until it starts to root/sprout out. Once it starts to sprout, she’ll then put it in a pot of soil, in her green house and let it grow out. So that’s what I’m doing so far. Let’s hope they grow just as good as the ones she showed in the video 🙂

The woman who taught me so much about Hmong food, love, generosity, kindness, strength, hard work, sincerity, and patience. The woman who taught me to fight for what I want and what is right. She is an inspiration. She deserves all the happiness in the world. 

Remember the 3 cakes I baked my mom last year? Well… I didn’t bake her 3 cakes this year, but I did book a small studio so we could take some photos wearing our beautiful Hmong outfits together. My mom has been collecting Hmong clothes all throughout her life; ones made by her, her mom, and her sisters. They are all so unique in their own ways. My favorite ones are all the more traditional ones. This photoshoot was kept simple wearing our Moob Moos Pheeb outfit with the chicken comb hat made by my grandma. 

Besides our food, traditional Hmong clothing has long been one of the most meaningful ways we have preserved and expressed our cultural identity through intricate embroidery, the vibrant colors, and distinct designs and styles. It’s been our way of storytelling. Being able to share this photoshoot with my mom as a birthday gift to her was and will always be special. So let’s wish Mama Chao a happy birthday! 🎉

Cabbage rolls are here! So many of you have been a Cabbage rolls are here! So many of you have been asking me to show you how I like to make cabbage rolls at home and here is my take on it. I’m usually not a big fan of cabbage rolls since they can be quite tedious to make and taste kinda one note. HOWEVER, I’ve been playing with ingredients, textures, and dipping sauces to make cabbage rolls a lot more flavorful and enjoyable and I can say this recipe is it! It hits all my tastebuds and the dipping sauce is flavor bomb! This cabbage roll is inspired by my love for hot pot. So it’s basically a hot pot(ish) in a cabbage roll. It’s filled with bok choy, mushrooms, lotus roots, chicken, and noodles. It’s paired with an amazing full of flavor sesame paste sauce. The sesame dipping sauce is a twist between the Chinese sesame hot pot dipping sauce and the Japanese goma dare. It’s nutty, a little sweet, aromatic, and full of umami which really elevates the cabbage rolls.

In the Hmong culture, cabbage rolls are often times made with the same filling used in egg rolls. It’s a great alternative for anyone who wants something a little lighter and healthier. Since cabbage rolls are often times eaten as a healthy dish, it can be quite plain for those who loves bold flavors. So this recipe (mostly the sauce 😁) is for those who like bold flavors. But by all means, this cabbage rolls can be enjoyed as is without the dipping sauce for a healthier option or be eaten with another type of dipping sauce you enjoy. Feel free to adjust the amount of sugar you add too! It’s all up to you when you’re the one cooking it in the kitchen 😎 So I hope you can give this one a try and happy cooking!

What began as a space to document my family’s recipes & tell stories has grown into something more than I could envision. It’s been a creative outlet for me to share my love for food, my craft, and my culture. I’ve been so immersed in the food & digital world that I often forget to pause and introduce the person behind it all. This space has always been about being true to myself, connecting with you, keeping things real, authentic, fun, & being able to create freely without chasing algorithms or fitting into expectations. 

So, nyob zoo everyone! My name is Cindy Her. I’m a Hmong American chef & baker. I’m also the creator, recipe developer, photographer, writer, editor, and video producer behind C.HerCreations (C.HawjCreations), a digital platform dedicated to Hmong food, storytelling, traveling, crafting, gardening, & many other cuisines. Everything you see from the recipes, videos, photos, & writing are all created & produced entirely by me with the help of my family. 

I love traveling and immersing myself in different cultures, especially through food. I’m pretty adventurous when it comes to trying new dishes, though I do hesitate on certain types of seafood. So far, I’ve traveled to over 10 countries and many of my creations are inspired by my travels and my professional training. When I’m not in the kitchen, I enjoy gardening & crafting. Skydiving, hiking, antique shopping, food hopping, cinematography? I’M ALL IN. 

Looking ahead, my goal is to open my own restaurant someday. But before that, I hope to publish a Hmong cookbook so you can have a piece of the Hmong culture to hold onto & bring into your own kitchen.
