Growing up, my grandparents would spend the majori Growing up, my grandparents would spend the majority of their time in the garden planting crops for the season. While my parents were at work, my grandparents would bring us along. Sometimes we would help them pull weeds, water the plants, dig soil, or to simply just keep them company. Believe it or not I loved it. And here we are today. I’ve been spending years learning from my grandparents and parents about the importance of gardening. It’s become an important part of me to take in as much knowledge as I can. It’s part of our culture, our history, our livelihood. Traditional Hmong food is commonly made from homegrown & fresh ingredients. Simple yet full of love & comfort. Boiled pork with mustard greens is a classic dish that hits the soul when you use freshly butchered pig & home grown mustard greens. Ntsis Taub Hau (Squash/pumpkin shoots soup) is one of those dishes you sometimes forget because (depending on the area) getting pumpkin shoots can be hard. It’s one of those dishes that can only be done through those that plant them, or those that sell them. We have scraped Hmong cucumber and boiled Hmong pumpkin that can only taste right by actually using that specific cucumber and pumpkin. Of course you can maybe get some of these ingredients at the store but it just doesn’t hit the same. You get the point. So being able to garden & grow ingredients I grew up with has been a blessing. I hope to continue sharing what I’ve learned with you all. And even if you don’t have a garden or maybe don’t know where to start, go support your local farmers/ farmers market when you get the chance.
